Garden Gate is a small 501c-3 (non-profit) progressive preschool and toddler center, offering full and part-time school year and summer programs. Our program philosophy and goals have been influenced in part by the approach to early childhood education originating in the infant/toddler centers and preschools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Loris Malaguzzi, founder of the Reggio approach, based his methods on the principles of respect, responsibility, and community.
Children ages 15mos-3yrs explore and learn in a creative, nurturing classroom. Child to teacher ratio is 4:1.
Children ages 3.5-5yrs engage in a dynamic learning community. Child to teacher ratio is 7:1.
Art for Education
Every child at Garden Gate has the opportunity to work in our art studio and participates in varied art experiences including studio arts, dance, music and drama.
The summer program at Garden Gate serves children ages 2-5 in an art based exploration of the natural world on Martha's Vineyard.
Projects might last a few hours, a few days, or even a few months. At Garden Gate children have time to explore their interests, to pursue questions, create theories and extend knowledge. Project work allows children to play around with ideas in a concrete way that matches their developmental and intellectual abilities. Children come together in groups to work on projects, building collaborative problem-solving skills as they share ideas and knowledge.
